War, a destructive, barbarous and absurd phenomenon, which humanity has been repeating with its behaviour since the beginning of time. No less than 14,400 wars are said to have been waged during the historically documented history of humanity, with more than 3.5 billion deaths. Based on Euripides’s tragedy "The Trojan Women”, Greek choreographer Andonis Foniadakis puts the theme of war at the core of his new piece, which he is creating especially for the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz Ballet.
His “Troy” deals with the price people must pay for armed conflicts, and the issue of how egoistic destructiveness inevitably impacts individuals – especially those that are marginalised and are vulnerable. Using the now legendary war of antiquity like a camera lens, Andonis Foniadakis extends the field of view to modern day conflicts, to address the question as to how we can all engage ourselves for a more peaceful and more just world.
