The nouveau riche Mr. Pitzelberger extends invitations to an exclusive evening party in his salon. More than his riches, he wishes to show off his appreciation of art with world famous virtuosos of the Paris Opera coming to entertain a select circle of guests with Italian arias. However, society’s interest does not seem to be particularly great. The most illustrious of the invited guests send their regrets and even the star singers become indisposed. In addition, the fidgety host is worried about his sister Ernestine who nourishes amorous sentiments for a penniless musician. But can this precarious situation still be saved?
The festive opening celebration of »Münchener Actien-Volkstheater« on Gärtnerplatz concluded on 4 November 1865 with a performance by Jacques Offenbach’s one act operetta, at the time entitled »Eine musikalische Soirée in der Vorstadt«. With this restaging of Offenbach’s amusing farce we commemorate the moment when Gärtnerplatztheater came into being and, 150 years later, invite you back to an amusing soirée in Pitzelberger’s salon!
