Neue Welt - Neues Glück
What connects Haydn, Bartók and Dvořák?
All three went abroad, where they composed the works on our programme. Haydn went to London, where he celebrated his greatest successes, Bartók resided in Switzerland before emigrating to the USA, where Dvořák also settled with part of his family for three years.
What’s so special about these pieces created in exile?
It would appear that all three far from home were reminded of their origins and beginnings, and so found a new personal style. Bartók connects various traditions, whereby he combines baroque forms with elements of Hungarian folk music. Dvořák interweaves rhythms and harmonies that he had discovered in the US with the tonal language of his Czech homeland. After the concert, you can enjoy the Slavic folk music that connects our composers in the foyer.
