Kaffeekantate
»Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht«, BWV 211
Music by Johann Sebastian Bach
Text by Picander
Semi-concert performance
Around 1734, coffee was viewed with suspicion by those in power, who feared a coup by the excited masses and subsequently introduced a coffee tax. Liesgen Schlendrian also loves nothing more than drinking her daily coffee – a bad habit in the eyes of her conservative father. But Liesgen has no revolution in mind, rather permission to marry. But then it would have to be a man with whom she could share her passion...
In his famous Coffee Cantata, the highlight of 18th-century Saxon coffee house music, Bach shows his hearty, humorous side and, using folk elements, creates an invigorating chamber music work of art centred on true passion!
