Ein Sommernachtstraum

Music by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy
To words by William Shakespeare

75 Minuten

Everyone knows the famous Wedding March. It is a world hit and one of the most frequently performed pieces of music of all times. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy was personally commissioned by the Prussian king, Friedrich Wilhelm IV, to compose stage music for the German premiere of William Shakespeare's "A Summer Night's Dream". The premiere performance occurred on 14 October 1843 in Potsdam. Mendelssohn's music thereafter and well into the 20th century remained inseparably linked with practically every public performance of the play and contributed decisively to this work gaining acceptance on German-speaking stages almost 250 years after it premiered in London.

Let yourself be invited, in the run-up to celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the Gärtnerplatztheater, to enjoy magnificently romantic music written for an absolute classic of summer theatre in the open with us at Gärtnerplatz!
