Carnival is in full swing in Paris, and for two newcomers things are also getting quite exciting! The maid Angèle has set her sights on being a big varieté star on the Champs-Elysées. René, the Countess of Luxembourg’s valet, summarily masquerades as the Count, as a quick way to easy money. The painter Armand and his sweetheart decide to be poor but happy. René on the other hand is hired by Angèle’s »patron« Basil, for a fictitious marriage with her, to gentrify her with an aristocratic title. Opulent duets, massive bust-ups and a magical happy end are inevitable!
»Is that you, my smiling happiness?« was the question Franz Lehár and his librettist asked their grateful audiences in 1909 and admonished them: »Dear friend, one does not reach for the stars ...« With his »Luxembourg«, the composer, the new star in the operetta heavens since the international success of »The Merry Widow« just a few years earlier, created a no less melody-rich and thrilling masterpiece. At Gärtnerplatztheater, it now awakens to a new life in the vibrant and buoyant version and staging by Peter Lund.
