Mozart Requiem

For seven decades, the world's elite classical musicians have been performing in the monastery church in Ottobeuren: stars such as Leonard Bernstein, Kent Nagano, Herbert von Karajan, Sir Colin Davis and Benjamin Britten have conducted concerts here in the basilica. In over 200 concerts, world-famous orchestras and choirs have thrilled well over 350,000 visitors.

From July 2026, the orchestra of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz will also be able to count itself among them when it makes its debut here under the musical direction of Hansjörg Albrecht and with the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Choir Hamburg. In the unique monastic atmosphere, two of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's most moving works will be performed: Symphony No. 40 and the Requiem in D minor.

The dramatic expressiveness and inner turmoil of the G minor symphony meet the moving spirituality of the Requiem – that unfinished masterpiece which is still surrounded by a special aura today. In the sonorous expanse of the baroque church interior, the choir, soloists and orchestra unfold a musical journey from passionate intensity to comforting hope.
