Stephan von Wedel
After completing his studies as a qualified fashion designer, Stephan von Wedel initially worked as a costume assistant and shortly afterwards as a freelance stage and costume designer for musical and spoken theatre. Since then, he has worked at the Schauspielhaus Leipzig, the Berliner Ensemble on productions directed by Philip Tiedemann, the Chiemgau Music Festival, the Dortmund Opera, the Frankfurt Opera on Manuel de Fallaʼs »El retablo de Maese Pedro« and Viktor Ullmannʼs »Der Kaiser von Atlantis«, the Bonn Opera and the Landestheater Linz on »Tosca«, »LʼOrfeo« and »Die Fledermaus«.
In 2006, he designed the costumes for the European premiere of »Dead Man Walking« at the Semperoper Dresden and at the Klangbogen Festival in Vienna in a production by Nikolaus Lehnhoff. This was followed by work at the Bonn Opera for »Im weißen Rössl« and »Der Golem«, at the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna for »Das Fest« and »Aus dem Leben der Marionetten«, and at the Mainz State Theatre for »Antigone«. In Hanover, he was responsible for the costumes for the productions of »Lʼitaliana in Algeri«, »Il prigioniero«, »Lʼenfant et les sortilèges«, »La Calisto«, »La Cenerentola«, »Le nozze di Figaro« and »Eugene Onegin«. He worked on »Alcina« at the Cologne Opera, »Der gute Mensch von Sezuan« at the Det Norske Teatret in Oslo, »Mein Kampf«, »Happy End« and »Leonce und Lena« at the Heidelberg Theatre, and »Mir fällt zu Hitler nichts ein« and »Trommeln in der Nacht« at the Berliner Ensemble. For the workshop of the State Opera at the Schiller Theater, he is responsible for the sets for »Der gestiefelte Kater«, »Moscow, Cheryomushki«, »R. Hot«, »Vertrauenssache«, »Lezioni di Tenebra«, »Through Roses«, »Lohengrin« and the double bill »Tagebuch eines Verschollenen«/»La voix humaine«.
Other works include the stage design for the vocal opera »Benjamin« for the Young Opera of the Stuttgart State Opera, as well as the complete set design for Reimannʼs »Die Gespenstersonate« at the Staatsoper im Schiller Theater Berlin and »Die Kameliendame« at the Schlossparktheater Berlin. In Darmstadt, he designed the stage sets for »Simon Boccanegra«, followed by »Eugene Onegin« and »Der fliegende Holländer« at the Staatstheater Braunschweig, as well as the German premiere of Sara Kaneʼs »Psychosis 4.48« at the Semperoper Dresden. Most recently, he has worked on productions such as »Chess« at the Staatstheater Oldenburg, »Sister Act« at the Stadttheater Klagenfurt, »Die lustige Witwe« at the Schlossfestspiele Schwerin, »The Imaginary Invalid« for Dieter Hallervordenʼs 90th birthday at the Schlossparktheater Berlin, and »Rent a Friend« at the Theater Heilbronn.
