Simon Schabert

Simon Schabert studied stage and costume design in Stuttgart at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Martin Zehetgruber's class and completed his Master of Fine Arts in Design for Stage and Film at New York University Tisch School of the Arts in New York under Andrew Lieberman, Christine Jones and Paul Steinberg.

He has worked as an assistant at the Bregenz Festival, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, the Erl Festival, the opera houses in Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Graz, the Vienna State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Staatstheater Stuttgart, among others, for Heike Vollmer, Kaspar Glarner, Jo Schramm, Katharina Schlipf and Jürgen Rose.

He has designed his own stage sets for the Santa Fe Opera (»Dr Atomic«, directed by Peter Sellars), with the Morosis Kollektiv at WerkX in Vienna (»Wasted«), at the Theaternatur Festival (»Im Schatten der Hexen«, directed by Clara Hinterberger) and for the city of Balingen (»Zar und Zimmermann«, directed by Elisabeth Scharkin).

He also works as a set designer for film and television, having worked on several feature films, including »The Shortest Song« (2022), directed by Sam Patton, »Release« (2017), directed by Adel Morales, and »Couchmovie« (2013), directed by Isabell Braak, as well as numerous short films for SWR, BR and ARTE, among others. Most recently, he was responsible for the set design for the Swabian ZDF television series »Tschappel« (2025).
