Roland Schwab

Roland Schwab grew up in Munich. After studying physics and German language and literature for several semesters, he studied musical theatre direction in Hamburg under Götz Friedrich. He received further important inspiration as a master student of Ruth Berghaus. After working as personal assistant to Christine Mielitz, where he was jointly responsible for rehearsing »Der Ring des Nibelungen« at the Meininger Theater (conductor: Kirill Petrenko), Roland Schwab has been working as a freelance director at many international theatres. Recent notable productions include »Fragmente«, »Tiefland« and »Don Giovanni« at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, »Mefistofele« at the Bavarian State Opera, »Lohengrin« and »Der Rosenkavalier« in the Felsenreitschule Salzburg, and »Tristan und Isolde« at the Bayreuth Festival. In addition to his productions, Roland Schwab is also dedicated to teaching, for example at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts, the Bavarian Theatre Academy »August Everding« and, since 2023, as Professor of Music Drama at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
