Michael Nündel

Michael Nündel studied conducting at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin and early music performance practice at the Schola cantorum basiliensis in Basel. In the field of drama, he has conducted productions such as Brecht and Weill’s »Happy End« at the Kurt Weill Festival in Dessau, Robert Wilson’s »Dr. Caligari« at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin and several Offenbach operettas at the Berliner Ensemble.

Michael Nündel was initially Second Kapellmeister at the Kiel Theatre, where he was Musical Director for numerous productions, including operas by Strauss, Mozart, Handel, Verdi, Puccini, Tchaikovsky and musical and operetta productions such as »Sweet Charity«, »West Side Story«, »Crazy for You«, »Kiss me, Kate«, »The Black Rider«, »Hello Dolly«, »Im weißen Rössl« and »Orphée aux enfers«. His next position was that of First Kapellmeister at the Staatstheater Darmstadt. There he conducted productions including »Faust«, »Bluebeard’s Castle«, »Evita«, »Flashdance« and »Cabaret« and conducted ballet premieres such as »A Midsummer Night’s Dream«. Other productions include »Orlando«, »Footloose«, »Die Fledermaus«, »The Last Five Years«, »Tschick«, »Die Dreigroschenoper« and his own adaptation of »Saturday Night Fever«.

Michael Nündel is the designated chief conductor and music director of Musikalische Komödie Leipzig and works with a number of theatres and orchestras, including the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and the Staatstheater Wiesbaden. He made his debut at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz with the ballet production »Giselle«.
