Michael Alexander Rinz

Michael Alexander Rinz studied Applied Cultural Studies at the University of Lüneburg, specialising in music, language and communication, media and public relations as well as law and economics. He gained his first professional experience at the Hamburg Chamber Opera, the Lüneburg Theatre and the Hamburg State Opera.

In 2012, he became a member of the theatre management of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich, where he has since helped shape the artistic profile of the theatre as Managing Dramaturg and has launched premieres and first performances such as »Liliom«, »Schlagobers«, »Chitty Chitty Bang Bang«, »Gefährliche Liebschaften«, »Priscilla – Queen of the Desert«, »La Strada«, »Momo«, »Drei Männer im Schnee«, »Tootsie«, Monty Python’s »Not the Messiah«, »Rockin’ Rosie«, »Mata Hari« and »Oh! Oh! Amelio!«. As a translator, he wrote the German versions of the opera »Frau Schindler« and the musical »Priscilla ‒ Queen of the Desert«. In addition to various production dramaturgies and mediation formats, he is also involved in guest dramaturgies as part of collaborations with partner theatres such as the Volksoper Vienna, Graz Opera and St. Gallen Theatre. He curated the International MUT Authors’ Competition to promote young composers and librettists and was a jury member of the MUT Singing Competition and the National Singing Competition in Berlin.

2006‒2012, under the directorships of Tobias Wellemeyer and Karen Stone, Michael Alexander Rinz was appointed music dramaturge at Magdeburg Theatre. In addition to numerous production dramaturgies in the fields of opera, operetta, musicals and ballet as well as concert dramaturgies and moderations, he developed the concept idea for the founding of the Magdeburg Domplatz Open Air with the open-air-premiere of the musical »Titanic« and curated the follow-up productions »Evita«, Disney’s »Beauty and the Beast« and »Les Misérables« in terms of play selection and artist casting. Under the directorship of Karen Stone, he also conceived and founded the Magdeburg Musical Days in 2011 in conjunction with Magdeburg City Marketing and acquired directors and performers as well as the licences for premieres of plays such as »Sunset Boulevard«, Disney’s »Beauty and the Beast« and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s ballet debut »Wuthering Heights« for the theatre.

In the course of his theatre career, Michael Alexander Rinz has worked with directors such as Ben Baur, Adam Cooper, Matthias Davids, Andreas Gergen, Karoline Gruber, Claus Guth, Sebastian Hartmann, Thomas Hermanns, Stefan Huber, Philipp Kochheim, Josef E. Köpplinger, Peter Konwitschny, Stephen Lawless, Peter Lund, Gil Mehmert, Stefano Poda, Dirk Schmeding, Roland Schwab, Aron Stiehl, Olivier Tambosi and Emmy Werner. He was also artistic consultant to the Zwingenberg Castle Festival 2015‒2025 and works as a lecturer since 2012 at the Munich Adult Education Centre and since 2023 at the Bavarian Theatre Academy August Everding.
