Stage design

Kaspar Glarner

Kaspar Glarner was born in Zurich and studied in Paris. After graduating, he worked there initially as a freelance painter, graphic artist and interior designer until Rolf Glittenberg took him on as an assistant stage designer at the Thalia Theatre Hamburg. He was the assistant to Erich Wonder on several international opera productions. After developing the first works of his own with Markus Imhoof and Hansgünther Heyme, Kaspar Glarner worked with such people as Uwe-Eric Laufenberg at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, at the Grand Théâtre de Genève (»Tosca«), in Oldenburg (»Peter Grimes«), Marseilles (»Lucrezia Borgia«), Freiburg (»Fidelio«) and Munich's Residenztheater (»Elementarteilchen«).

»Das Maß der Dinge« by LaBute and »Platonov« were produced at the Maxim Gorki Theatre Berlin, followed by »Der lächerliche Prinz Jodelet« by Reinhard Keiser at the Hamburg State Opera. At the Hans Otto Theater Potsdam he created the stage designs for »Die Hermannsschlacht« and »Die Dreigroschenoper« and for the premieres of »Katte« by Thorsten Becker and »Julia Timoschenko« by Adriana Altaras and Maxim Kurotschkin. In Potsdam he also created the stage sets for »Ein Sommernachtstraum« (produced by Patricia Benecke). At the Augsburg Theatre, he designed the sets and costumes for »Kasimir und Karoline« (produced by Adriana Altaras). At the Frankfurt Opera, he designed the costumes for productions by Uwe-Eric Laufenberg (»Roméo et Juliette«), Keith Warner (»Death in Venice«, »Lear«, »Volo di notte«, »Il prigioniero« and »Falstaff«), Udo Samel (Schubert's song cycles »Die schöne Müllerin«, »Winterreise« and »Schwanengesang«) and Christoph Quest (»Die Weiße Rose«). He also worked with the director Keith Warner on the stage design of »Die Frau ohne Schatten« at the Hamburg State Opera, »Katja Kabanova« at Vienna's Theater an der Wien, »Simon Boccanegra« and »Tannhäuser« in Strasbourg and »Die Teufel von Loudon« in Copenhagen.

In addition, he also worked with directors such as Dale Duesing (»Hänsel und Gretel« in Berne), Christine Mielitz (»Der junge Lord«, »Il trittico« in Dortmund, Lera Auerbach's »Gogol« at the Theater an der Wien), Walter Sutcliffe (»Owen Wingrave« and »Gespenstersonate« in Frankfurt, »Albert Herring« in Linz, »Werther« in Magdeburg, »Luisa Miller« and »La traviata« in Braunschweig) and Vincent Boussard (stage designs for »Adriana Lecouvreur« and Christoph Willibald Gluck's »Ezio« at the Frankfurt Opera). He has worked with Johannes Erath to date in Berne (»Les contes d’Hoffmann«), Cologne (»Aida«) and Graz (»Lohengrin«). In Bordeaux he designed the costumes for »Anna Bolena« and in Toulouse for »Owen Wingrave« and »The Turn of the Screw«.

He made his debut at the Gärtnerplatztheater as set designer for »Schlagobers«.
