Stage design

Jens Kilian

Jens Kilian studied stage and costume design at the Berlin-Weißensee Academy of Art and then worked as a set designer for DEFA Babelsberg. This was followed by engagements as a stage design assistant at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and as a props manager for the Cologne City Theatres. Since 1987, he has worked as a freelance stage and costume designer in the worlds of opera, musicals, drama and dance.

Jens Kilian has worked regularly with directors such as Dieter Wedel, Gil Mehmert, Joachim Schloemer, Christof Nel, Jossi Wieler, Martin Kušej, Johan Simons, Karin Henkel and Vera Nemirowa. Numerous productions in which he has been involved have been invited to the Berliner Theatertreffen, such as Dimiter Gotscheff's »Fräulein Julie« (1993), Thirza Brunken's »Stecken, Stab und Stangl« (1996) and Katrin Henkel's »Die Ratten« (2008). In 2010, he created the stage design for »Aida« at the Bayerische Staatsoper.

He was responsible for the stage designs for Katrin Henkel's »Dogville« in Frankfurt am Main, »Le nozze di Figaro« at the Theater an der Wien, »Vasco da Gama« at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, »LʼÉcume des jours« at the Oper Stuttgart and »Der Ring des Nibelungen« at the Oper Frankfurt, amongst others. In autumn 2015 he was awarded the German Musical Theatre Prize for his stage design for »Das Wunder von Bern« in Hamburg.

At the Gärtnerplatztheater he created the stage design for »Hair« in 2016.
