Alexander Grassauer

The young Austrian bass baritone Alexander Grassauer got his initial voice training with Sigrid Rennert in Bruck an der Mur. Later he studied singing with Karlheinz Hanser and in singing class with Florian Boesch at the Vienna University for Music and Performing Art. He received further artistic inspiration from Ramon Vargas, Thomas Hampson, Robert Holl and Elīna Garanča.

On the opera stage he played Masetto (»Don Giovanni«) at the Municipal Theatre in Baden bei Wien, Marchese d’Obigny (»La traviata«) at the Opera Festival of Klosterneuburg, Figaro (»Le nozze di Figaro«) at Schönbrunn Schloßtheater as well as, most recently as the speaker in »Die Zauberflöte« on a tour of Milan’s Teatro alla Scala in Shanghai.

His concert performances include national and international performances including various Lieder concerts, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in Bangkok, Bach’s »Johannes Passion« in Vienna’s Konzerthaus, Mozart’s »Requiem« in Germany, Mendelssohn’s »Paulus« in the Golden Auditorium of Vienna’s Musikverein and further appearances in countries like Italy, Hungary and Poland. A special highlight in his young career were two appearances at the »Klassik unter Sternen« and »Klassik in den Alpen« open air concerts with Elīna Garanča in the summer of 2019.

Alexander Grassauer is an award winner of several international singing competitions. He won first prize at the Hariclea-Darclée Singing Contest in Romania in 2017, at the International Brahms Competition in 2017 and at the 24th Ferruccio-Tagliavini Singing Contest. He also won the prize for the »best young talent« at the 4th International Otto Edelmann Competition in Vienna and first prize at the »Future Voices« initiative of Elīna Garanča and Karel Mark Chichon.
