Gideon Poppe

Born in Hamburg, Gideon Poppe began his musical training in 2002 with Günter Binge at the University of Music in Lübeck. While he was still studying in Lübeck, he was involved in a number of productions at the Hamburger Kammeroper and Hamburg Children's Theatre. In 2006 he continued his studies at the University of Music in Karlsruhe under Donald Litaker, graduating with a Diploma from each course in 2008 and 2009 respectively.

From 2007 to 2009, Gideon Poppe was a member of the opera studio of the Baden State Theatre in Karlsruhe. During this time, he appeared in such roles as Conte di Lerma in »Don Carlo«, Monostatos in »Die Zauberflöte« and Robert in »Das Feuerwerk«. In 2009/2010, he was permanently engaged at the Baden State Theatre in Karlsruhe, during which time he performed in such roles as Pedrillo in »Die Entführung aus dem Serail«. In February, he made his debut at the Handel Festival in Karlsruhe as Emilio in »Partenope« conducted by Michael Hofstetter. In the area of songs and lieder, he gained experience in masterclasses with artists such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. His repertoire also includes a wide range of tenor roles in oratorios.

From 2011 to 2013, he was a tenor member of the ensemble at the Kassel State Theatre, where he sang in such productions as »Parsifal«, »Otello«, »Fidelio« and »Griselda«. Since the 2013/2014 season, Gideon Poppe has been a member of the ensemble at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, where he has appeared in many productions in roles such as Bardolfo (»Falstaff«), Gastone (»La traviata«), Remendado (»Carmen«), Conte di Lerma and Pang (»Turandot«).

In August 2014, he made his début at the BBC Proms in London's Royal Albert Hall as the Second Jew and Slave in a concert performance of »Salome« with the Orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin under the baton of Donald Runnicles. A further guest performance of the Deutsche Oper Berlin took him to the Royal Opera House Muscat in Oman with Puccini's »Manon Lescaut« in 2014.

At the beginning of 2015, he made his debut at the Frankfurt Opera as Boni in »Die Csárdásfürstin«. He also made his debut with this piece in January 2015 in the Philharmonie in Cologne as part of a guest performance by the Frankfurt Opera and has appeared as a guest with the Lautten Compagney Berlin in »Die Zauberflöte« conducted by Wolfgang Katschner.
