Gerhard Ernst

Gerhard Ernst completed his training in drama and singing in his home city of Vienna. His first engagement took him to Garmisch-Partenkirchen from 1968 to 1970, then from 1970 to 1977 he worked in Mainz and from 1977 to 1985 in Krefeld/Mönchengladbach. During these years, he also gave guest performances in Münster, Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen, Holland, Belgium and Spain. From 1985 to 1990, he was engaged by the Vereinigte Bühnen Graz, from 1990 to 1995 at the Burgtheater in Vienna, and from 1995 to 2001 at the Theater in der Josefstadt.

Gerhard Ernst has been a member of the ensemble at the Vienna Volksoper since 2001. He has a wide repertoire of roles in operettas, musicals and plays. In addition, the artist has appeared in many television dramas and crime thrillers, such as »Tatort«, »Kommissar Rex«, »Stockinger« and »Eurocops«, and has performed in one-man shows such as »Heute ziagt der g’schupfte Ferdl frische Socken an« and »Der Papa wird’s scho richten«. He also played alongside Maximilian Schell and Uschi Glas in the television film »Alles Glück dieser Erde«.

He performed at the Volksoper in countless roles, including Doolittle (»My Fair Lady«), Fürst Populescu and Penizek (»Gräfin Mariza«), Frank and Frosch (»Die Fledermaus«), Fiakerkutscher [Carriage Driver] and Kagler (»Wiener Blut«), Schrank (»West Side Story«), Lazar Wolf and Tevje (»Anatevka«), Bartolomeo Delacqua (»Eine Nacht in Venedig«), Briefträger [Postman] (»Die feuerrote Friederike«), Graf Bojazowitsch (»Die Herzogin von Chicago«), Scalza (»Boccaccio«), Conte Carnero (»Der Zigeunerbaron«), Concierge (»Der Graf von Luxemburg«), Philippe (»Der Opernball«), General (»Das Land des Lächelns«), Der Kerkermeister [The Jailer] (»Die Kluge«), Njegus (»Die lustige Witwe«), Oberwachmann Sachsl (»Kehraus um St. Stephan«), Würmchen (»Der Vogelhändler«), Richter [Judge] (»Hello, Dolly!«), Herr Zeller (»The Sound of Music«) and Big Jule (»Guys and Dolls«).
