Dr. Rachel Salamander

Rachel Salamander was born in 1949 in the DP camp in Deggendorf. She studied German Studies, Romance Studies, and philosophy at Ludwig Maximilian University. After completing her doctorate in 1982, the literary scholar and publicist founded the first specialised bookshop in Munich for literature on Judaism.

From 2001 to 2013, she was editor of the weekly supplement »Literarische Welt« in the daily newspaper »Die Welt«; from 2013 to 2014 she succeeded Marcel Reich-Ranicki as editor of the »Frankfurter Anthologie« in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and founded the FAZ-Literaturforum, and was also a deputy member of the supervisory board of Suhrkamp Verlag AG from 2015 to 2024. She has received many honours, including the Federal Cross of Merit, the Bavarian Order of Merit, the Schiller Prize in 2013 and the Heinrich Heine Prize in 2020. She lives in Munich and was made an honorary citizen of the city in 2019.
