C. Bernd Sucher

C Bernd Sucher was born in Bielefeld and grew up in Hamburg. He graduated from the Albrecht Thaer Gymnasium in 1969. After that he studied at the University of Hamburg and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich German literature, drama and Romance languages and received a doctorate for a dissertation on Martin Luther’s attitude to Jews, subtitled »An interpretation from a German literary perspective«.

From 1978 to 1980 he was the lead culture editor of »Schwäbische Zeitung« in Ulm and then switched to »Süddeutsche Zeitung« in Munich where he was until 1999 the editor responsible for voice theatre and chief theatre critic. Until 2005 he wrote for that newspaper as an exclusive author and later worked as a freelance author and critic, inter alia for »Die Zeit« and »Theater heute«.

During his time as editor, C Bernd Sucher taught after 1989 at the German Journalism College in Munich and at LMU at the Institute for Drama. In 1992 and 1993 he was a guest lecturer at the University of Eichstätt (didactics of German language and literature). In 1995 and 1996 he was with the Gitis Institute of Moscow (theatre criticism). Since 1996 he has been professor at the College of Television and Film and since the winter semester of 1997/1998 has taught the post-graduate course of study in »theatre, film and television criticism« in cooperation with the August Everding Theatre Academy.

C Bernd Sucher is a member of various juries, such as that of the Berlin Theatre Rendezvous, the Else Lasker Schuler playwriter prize, the Körber Studio for Young Producers, the Heidelberg Play Market as well as a juror and festival celebrant at »Radical Youth« at Munich Volkstheater. He is a member of the PEN Club, the Rotary Club of Munich Hofgarten, the Munich Gentlemen’s Club and the German Academy of Performing Arts.

With his literary lecture series, »Suchers Leidenschaften« he has since 1999 appeared with theatre artists in Munich and other European cities and the series was also shown as a television programme by Bavarian Radio.
