Andrè Schuen

The baritone Andrè Schuen comes from Alto Adige. He studied at the University Mozarteum in Salzburg with Horiana Branisteanu as well as studying Lieder and oratorio with Wolfgang Holzmair. He attended master courses with Kurt Widmer, Thomas Allen, Brigitte Fassbaender, Marjana Lipovsek, Romualdo Savastano and Olaf Bär. In 2009 he was the prize winner at the International Summer Academy of the University Mozarteum in Salzburg and won first prize in the singing competition of the Walter und Charlotte Hamel Stiftung. In 2010 he completed his graduation examinations in opera and lieder and oratorio at the Salzburg Mozarteum with distinction and was decorated with the Hanna Ludwig Prize and the Lilli Lehmann Medal.

It was during his studies that he could be seen, inter alia as the Lackey in »Ariadne auf Naxos« in a production of the Salzburg Landestheater, and he sang at the Mozarteum and on various minor stages in Germany and Austria the title roles in »Le nozze di Figaro« and appeared on stage in »Al gran sole carico d'amore« at the Salzburg Festival. In 2010 he was admitted to the Young Singers Project in Salzburg and following, in 2011, took part in »Salome«, »Macbeth« and »Le Rossignol« as well as in 2012 as Moralès in »Carmen«.

In 2010-2014 he was a member of the Graz Opera ensemble where he interpreted the roles of Jeletzky (»Pique Dame«), Masetto (»Don Giovanni«), Belcore (»L'elisir d'amore«), Ford (»Falstaff«), Papageno (»Die Zauberflöte«), Heerrufer (»Lohengrin«) and Roi Alphonse (»La Favorite«). In addition, he made guest appearances as Don Alvaro (»Il viaggio a Reims«) at the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp/Ghent and in the title role of »Don Giovanni« as well as as Guilelmo (»Così fan tutte«) in Montpellier. He is counted among the very few singers who could be heard three times in the Da Ponte Cycle of Nikolaus Harnoncourt at Theater an der Wien: as Figaro, Don Giovanni and Guilelmo, whereupon he was distinguished with the public prize of ORF Musiktheater.

In 2014 he once again sung the title role in »Don Giovanni« in Perm under Teodor Currentzis and in 2015 he appeared on stage in the title role in Paisiello's »Il barbiere di Siviglia« under René Jacobs at Theater an der Wien as well as at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels.

In the concert field, Andrè Schuen has sung, besides numerous masses and cantatas, among other things in Bach's works Weihnachtsoratorio, St. John's Passion, St. Matthew's Passion and the Mass in H Minor, in Haydn's »Schöpfung«, Handel's »Messiah«, Mozart's and Faure's »Requiem«, Brahms's »Deutsches Requiem«, Britten's »War Requiem«, Mendelssohn Bartholdy's »Die erste Walpurgisnacht« and Schumann's »Das Paradies und die Peri« with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic under Simon Rattle, the WDR Symphony Orchestra under Jukka Pekka Saraste, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Bamberg Symphony under Daniel Harding and the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées under Philippe Herreweghe.

In the field of Lieder he has worked with the pianist Daniel Heide. Included in his ever growing repertoire are Schubert's »Die Winterreise«, Schumann's »Dichterliebe« and »Liederkreis op. 24«, Wolf's »Harfner-Gesänge«, Ibert's »Don-Quichotte-Lieder«, Martin's »Jedermann-Monologe«, as well as other selected Lieder of various different eras.
