Michael Dangl
The actor and author Michael Dangl began his theatre career in the »Karawane Salzburg«. At the age of 18, he joined the Salzburg State Theatre, before moving on to German theatres from Munich to Hamburg. In 1998, Helmuth Lohner engaged him at Vienna’s Theater in der Josefstadt, where he has played the major roles of classical and modern theatre ever since. In 2001 he received the »European Culture Prize«, in 2023 the »Raimund Ring« and the professional title »Kammerschauspieler«. He has been an honorary member of the Theater in der Josefstadt since 2026 – where he is currently playing Herbert von Karajan in »Letzte Runde« and » LʼAvare« in Molière’s comedy.
Michael Dangl has performed at the Salzburg, Reichenau and Bregenz Festivals. He shoots cinema and TV films, writes and speaks literary texts for Ö1 and creates recitation programmes, whereby collaboration with musicians is particularly close to his heart. He has given concerts with Gidon Kremer, Jordi Savall, Rafael Fingerlos, Nicolas Altstaedt, Julia Hagen, the Kremerata Baltica, the Concentus Musicus Wien, the Klangforum Wien at venues such as the Wiener Musikverein, the Wiener Konzerthaus, the MUTH and Akzent theatres, the Kultursommer Semmering, the Theater im Park, the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival, the Styriarte Graz, the Menuhin Festival Gstaad and the Gmundner Festwochen.
The programmes with his wife, the flautist Maria Fedotova, also combine Michael Dangl’s literary and musical passions (»Casanova«, »Die Nachtigall«, »7 Minuten vor Weihnachten«), as does his collaboration with Konstantin Wecker (»Der Klang der ungespielten Töne« at the Gärtnerplatztheater). Since 2018, he has also played Henry Higgins in »My Fair Lady« and Frosch in »Die Fledermaus« (co-production with the Teatro Maggio Musicale, Florence) at the Gärtnerplatztheater. In Moscow, he played Frosch in Russian in the Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. He is on tour with Maria Köstlinger and Christoph Pauli with his own chanson programme »Liebe ist auch ein Theater«.
Michael Dangl is the author of books and theatre plays, the bestseller »Grado ‒ abseits der Pfade« is in its 8th edition, his new novel about Johann Strauss, »Der Walzermacher«, was presented as part of the Johann Strauss Year 2025, for which he also organised and performed in an evening’s programme with Diana Damrau at the Theater an der Wien.
