Daniel Gutmann

The Austrian baritone Daniel Gutmann is one of the most versatile baritones of his generation. Since 2019, he has been a member of the ensemble at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich, where he has built up a wide-ranging repertoire spanning from Mozart to operetta and musicals. His key roles include the title role in »Don Giovanni«, Il Conte (»Le nozze di Figaro«), Papageno (»The Magic Flute«), Dandini (»La Cenerentola«), Escamillo (»Carmen«), the Pirate King (»The Pirates of Penzance«), Albert (»Werther«), Dr Falke (»Die Fledermaus«), Tymoleon Gerius (»Waldmeister«), Javert (»Les Misérables«) and Figaro in the world premiere of Johanna Doderer’s opera »Der tollste Tag«.

Guest engagements have taken him to venues including the Salzburg Festival, the Nuremberg State Theatre, the Theatre St. Gallen, the Vienna Opera Summer, and Tokyo, where he made his debut in 2026 as Il Conte in Mozart’s »Le nozze di Figaro«.

Daniel Gutmann completed his musical training in Herzogenburg, St. Pölten and Vienna. He studied singing with Julia Bauer-Huppmann and classical guitar with Melitta Heinzmann at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna. Whilst still a student, he appeared at the Schönbrunner Schlosstheater as Figaro (»Le nozze di Figaro«), Leporello (»Don Giovanni«) and Toante (»Oreste«), as well as on studio and off-theatre stages as Demetrius (»A Midsummer Night’s Dream«) and in the title role of »Don Giovanni«.

Alongside his work in opera, Daniel Gutmann devotes himself wholeheartedly to concert and art-song performances. Recitals and concert tours have taken him to New York, Singapore, Washington D.C. and Texas, as well as throughout Austria and Germany. He has performed at venues including the Tiroler Osterfestspielen Erl, the Wiener Konzerthaus and the Wiener Musikverein. A regular annual highlight is the Traisental Cultural Festival at Walpersdorf Castle in Lower Austria. Since 2021, he has been a regular guest on Bavarian Television, performing operetta roles and Viennese songs. In 2023, he released the solo CD »Tränenflut« with pianist Maximilian Kromer, featuring Schumann songs based on poems by Heinrich Heine, on the Gramola label.

He is a prize-winner at several national and international singing competitions, including Elīna Garanča’s »ZukunftsStimmen«, the Petyrek-Lang Song Competition and »Iuventus Canti«. He also holds a degree in Sports Science from the University of Vienna and, whilst studying, was active as a decathlete in competitive sport with the Viennese athletics club DSG.

Alongside his classical career, Daniel Gutmann is the frontman and songwriter of the country band »The Groovecake Factory«, with whom he has won numerous national and international awards and released two studio albums.
