Das Bewerbungsverfahren
The two-stage application process for the 2027/2028 Opera Studio begins on 5 October 2026.
Stage 1 (online application)
Prerequisites:
- A university degree (or equivalent qualification) in the fields of singing or piano
- not older than 29 years of age on the cut-off date of 1 September 2027
Video material to be submitted:
Singers:
- An opera aria
- An aria from an operetta
- An aria, a song or a piece of your own choosing
At least one of the three pieces must be in German.
Pianists:
- A solo piece (max. 10 minutes)
- An aria by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with a singer
- An aria or a song in German, sung and accompanied by the candidate themselves
Closing date for applications: 30 November 2026.
Invitations to the second round are expected to be sent out in early January 2027.
Stage 2 (at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz)
Dates: 27, 28 and 29 January 2027
Singers:
A total of five pieces must be prepared – three of which are arias from different stylistic periods, one of them from an operetta. Applicants are free to choose the other two pieces, which may also be from the musical theatre genre. Pieces submitted as part of the online application may be performed again.
Pianists:
- Overture to »Die Fledermaus« by Johann Strauss (possibly with a conductor)
- Quintet No. 5 from »Die Zauberflöte« by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: playing whilst singing (or miming) all the vocal parts
- Two set arias (titles to be announced in mid-January). During the audition, candidates will accompany members of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz ensemble and work with them on
- sight-reading
Successful candidates will be supported for two years under a training contract, with remuneration based on the minimum wage set out in the NV Bühne collective agreement.
Please note that if you are invited to the second stage of the application process, any travel expenses incurred cannot be reimbursed.
