Free as a bird the Parisian courtesan Violetta Valéry conducted her business until now – went with one today and with another tomorrow. In Alfredo Germont she has now found the man she wants to spend her life with. But Alfredo is the son of a well-respected family and Violetta is a prisoner of her extremely dubious past. Little wonder then that Alfredo’s father is concerned about his family's reputation and consequently, without wanting to, sends the young lovers spiralling into profound unhappiness ...

With »La traviata«, Giuseppe Verdi and his librettist Francesco Maria Piave wrote one of the most famous Italian operas, based on Alexandre Dumas’s play, »La Dame aux camélias« (»The Lady of the Camellias«), which at first flopped after its world premiere in 1853. At the centre of the action here is, as the Italian title says, »a woman who has strayed from the righteous path« – an unheard of notion at the time! Today »La traviata« is one of the most performed operas ever, full of familiar tunes and classic parts for exquisite singers.
