Prince Tamino is charged by the Queen of the Night to free her daughter from the clutches of the evil Sarastro. The odd but jolly bird catcher Papageno will help him with his task. But scarcely have they come upon Sarastro, when he emerges as a guiding light of goodness and the Queen as a vengeful hell-cat. Or do they? Are good and evil so easy to separate? What powers are actually at work here? On his way to Pamina, Tamino discovers himself and the world anew.

Mozart’s enigmatic opera about love, purification and humanity has been enchanting both adults and children since 1791. General Manager Josef E. Köpplinger stages the magical piece as a story revolving around the secret of transformation, of coming of age – but above all as a declaration of love to the world of imagination.

A young man is entwined by a large snake. Around him stand several actors and actresses in black costumes, including the three ladies of the Queen of the Night, who point their swords at the snake.

Prince Tamino lies unconscious on the lifeless body of a large snake. Three ladies dressed in black stand before him and try to wake him. In the background, a sparsely lit, rocky landscape is depicted.

Prince Tamino stands before a large decapitated snake and gazes hopefully into the distance. He holds a picture of Pamina in his hand. In the background, you can see a rocky landscape at night.

Papageno plays the pan flute. He is dressed colourfully. The man has pink hair, a neon green T-shirt, dark red trousers and a black and red patterned waistcoat. In the background lies the dead snake and a large pink tuft of feathers protrudes into the picture.

The Queen of the Night stands before Tamino. She smiles at him and almost envelops him in her cloak. Tamino sits on the floor before her, fearful and astonished, and looks up at her. In the background, you can see the moon and some stars in the night sky.

The three ladies present Tamino with the glowing magic flute. He carefully examines the precious instrument in his hands. Papageno stands next to them and tentatively reaches for the flute.

Papageno holds his magic glockenspiel protectively over himself and Pamina. Monostatos and his slaves, who are threateningly harassing the two, freeze.

Papageno and Pamina sit close together. They both lean forward slightly and move closer to kiss. In the backround there is a wall made of stone.

Prince Tamino is in Sarastro's temple. He stands before three very wide columns. Each of them is decorated with ornaments and bears an inscription. Wisdom, nature, reason

Tamino stands confrontational before Sarastro and accuses him. Sarastro is calm. Some of Sarastro's slaves accompany the scene. In the background are wide columns. The middle one bears the inscription ‘Nature’.

Sarastro descends a wide staircase. At the foot of the stairs stands Pamina, looking up at him. On either side stand the singers of the chorus, and in the second row his slaves. Sarastro's subordinates place a hand on their chests. Papageno watches the scene from a distance.

Pamina crouches on the floor, Sarastro looks down at her sternly. In the foreground, the boy walks forward.

Sarastro stands in a luminous cube positioned on a pedestal. In the background is the choir dressed in white. On the left of the picture, the boys sit and write something in notebooks.

Tamino and Papageno are trapped in the trial. They stand in a glowing cube on a pedestal. Papageno looks questioningly at Tamino, who is calling out to him. The three ladies approach angrily.

Papageno is held captive by the Queen of the Night's angry handmaidens and tries to appease them with gestures. Tamino stands helplessly behind him. The backdrop is a glowing cube standing on a pedestal on the otherwise dark stage.

Tamino, the boy and Papageno are in a dark cellar in Sarastro's palace. It is a cuboid structure built on a platform. Tamino stands inside it, happily holding his glowing magic flute in his hand. Papageno sits at his feet on the steps of the platform. On his lap is a basket of food and in his hand he holds a bottle of wine. He is happy. The boy watches the two with interest from the side.

Monostatos kneels before the Queen of the Night and kisses her hand. She looks down on him with dignity. Behind them stand the three ladies, talking to Monostatos. The scene is very dark, the Queen's headdress glows. Her long dark dress is studded with many sparkling rhinestones.

Papagena and Papageno stand happily facing each other. She places her hands on his shoulders and he puts his around her waist. The light is slightly pink. In the background, you can see branches entwined with vines.

Tamino and Pamina stand facing each other, holding hands. They are wearing long white robes. Behind them stand the Speaker and the Priest, looking at them. In the background of the scene, the chorus is assembled, with Sarastro, the Armoured Men and the Queen of the Night standing in the centre.
