Die Reise nach Reims

A luxurious hotel, somewhere between yesterday and today. An illustrious company of aristocrats, artists and eccentrics from across Europe have gathered to travel together to the French King’s coronation in Reims. But suddenly, lacking enough horses, their transport is gone, and with it their ability to get to the grand destination. Instead, romances, vanities and national rivalries flare, while each and all do their very best to be seen in their best light. The journey is cancelled, but out of the emergency nevertheless comes a grand and lavish celebration. But who is actually travelling where – and why?

Rossini’s virtuoso ensemble opera with no less than ten main roles is a sparkling firework of musical wit, international temperaments and bel canto virtuosity. Originally intended as a one-off coronation piece, »The Journey to Reims« today reads like a clever parable of Europe – full of individualisms, and yet yes, searching for the common path.
