Dirk Schmeding
Dirk Schmeding studied art and literature in Braunschweig before turning to drama. After various assistantships, in particular at the Deutsches Nationaltheater in Weimar, Staatsoper Stuttgart, Berlin’s Staatsoper Unter den Linden and the Salzburg Festival, he began work as a music drama director in 2013. His stagings took him to such venues as the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar, Luzerner Theater, Mainfrankentheater Würzburg, Oper Frankfurt, Oper Graz, Staatsoper Hannover, Staatstheater Augsburg, Staatstheater Braunschweig, Staatstheater Darmstadt, Theater an der Wien, Theater Kiel, Theater St. Gallen and the SWR Festival in Schwetzingen.
Important stagings of recent seasons include the first German performance of Dai Fujikura’s »Solaris« at the Staatstheater in Augsburg, Jaromír Weinberger’s »Švanda dudák« at the Graz Opera, and two highly regarded productions comprising Detlev Glanert’s »Caligula« at the Nationaltheater in Weimar and Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s »The Passenger« at the Braunschweig Staatstheater. His production of the German first performance of Albéric Magnard’s »Guercoeur« at Theater Osnabrück, unanimously praised by press and public alike, was selected as »Rediscovery of the Year« in the »Opernwelt« critics’ poll and nominated for the »2020 International Opera Awards«.
