Albert Pesendorfer

Born in Upper Austria, he began the 2025/2026 season with »Götterdämmerung« (Hagen) at the Teatro Manzoni in Bologna and rounded off the year with »Fidelio« (Rocco) at the Vienna State Opera. This was followed by »Der Rosenkavalier« (Baron Ochs) at the Vienna Volksoper and »Der Ring des Nibelungen«, both at the MüPa Festival in Budapest and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where he also appeared as Gurnemanz in »Parsifal«.

The previous seasons were also dominated by Wagner: »Götterdämmerung« (Hagen) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and at the Maifestspiele in Wiesbaden, »Tristan und Isolde« (Marke) in Seville and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, »Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg« (Veit Pogner) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, »Tannhäuser« (Landgraf) at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland, »Die Walküre« (Hunding) at the Teatro Manzoni in Bologna, as well as »Macbeth« (Banquo) in Tokyo with the Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Myung-Whun Chung, Baron Ochs also in Tokyo, and Beethoven’s »Leonore« in South Korea.

Prior to that, he appeared, amongst other roles, at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (Pastor Baltzer in »Oceane«, King Heinrich in »Lohengrin«, Rocco, Count Waldner in »Arabella«) and in Vienna – at both the State Opera and the Volksoper – as Baron Ochs, Hagen, Boris (»Boris Godunov«) and Daland (»Der fliegende Holländer«).

Albert Pesendorfer studied singing and the flute in Linz and Vienna. He held permanent engagements at the Erfurt Theatre, the Tyrolean State Theatre in Innsbruck, the Hanover State Opera and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. His operatic repertoire comprises over 70 roles, predominantly those of the German Wagnerian repertoire such as Hans Sachs, Veit Pogner, Landgraf Hermann, Gurnemanz, King Heinrich, King Marke, Fasolt, Hunding and Hagen, or those of the Italian repertoire such as Filippo II, Zaccaria, Sparafucile and Banquo.

Guest appearances have taken the bass to renowned German and international stages in the major roles of his repertoire, including the Stuttgart State Opera, the Cologne Opera, the Hamburg State Opera, the Semperoper in Dresden, the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp, the Zurich Opera, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Vienna State Opera, the Vienna Volksoper, the Theater an der Wien, the Tokyo National Opera, the MüPa Festival in Budapest, and the Bregenz and Bayreuth Festivals. Concert appearances have taken the singer to venues including the Vienna Musikverein, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Berlin Philharmonie, the Barbican Hall in London, as well as to Japan and the USA.

In the winter semester of 2015, Albert Pesendorfer also began teaching as a professor of singing at the Berlin University of the Arts.
