Bengt Gomér

Bengt Gomér is one of Scandinavia’s foremost scenographers, working with opera, theatre, and art projects. He studied art and philosophy at Lund University, and since 1990 he works with set and light design at theaters throughout Europe.

Bengt regularly works together with directors including Olivier Tambosi (»Lucia di Lammermoor«, »Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg« and »La traviata« at the Landestheater Linz, »Die Fledermaus« at the Oper Dortmund, »Otello« at Saarländisches Staatstheater Saarbrücken as well as »Don Giovanni« at the Nationaltheater Zagreb), Staffan Aspegren (»The Fallen Angels« at the National Theatre in Bergen, »Amadeus« at Stadsteatern in Stockholm, and »Die Fledermaus« at the Gothenburg Opera), Åsa Melldahl (»The Full Monty« at Stadsteatern in Gothenburg, »Sport&Fritid« at the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm, »Death and the Maiden« at Malmö Opera, and Ibsen’s »A Doll’s House« at Stadsteatern in Uppsala), and Mellika Melouani Melani (Bizet’s »Carmen«, Verdi’s »Rigoletto«, Handke’s »Publikumsbeschimpfung«, Breidahl and Frische’s »The Bank of Ebberöd«, Jelinek’s »Ulrike Maria Stuart« and Khemiri’s »We are a hundred«).

His work includes set designs for »A Clockwork Orange« by Anthony Burguess in Angered Teater in Gothenburg, »norway.today« by Igor Bauersima at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, »Betrayal« by Harold Pinter and »The Real Thing« by Tom Stoppard at Strindbergs Intima Teater in Stockholm, »The Hunchback of Notre Dame« by Victor Hugo at Helsingborg Stadsteater and »Four Nights of Dream« by Moto Osada at the Vadstena Academy.

Among his recent projects are Jelinek’s »Die Kontrakte des Kaufmanns« at the Royal Dramatic Theatre and Verdi’s »Un ballo in maschera« at Folkoperan in Stockholm with Mellika Melouani Melani, »Rebecca« at Malmö Opera with Åsa Melldahl, as well as »Un ballo in maschera« at the Staatsoper Hannover with Olivier Tambosi.
